How to get to Fernando de Noronha

Daily connecting flights are available from the Natal and Recife to Fernando de Noronha. There is also the option of taking a cruise from the Brazil coast to reach Fernando de Noronha. If you are in Brazil, we recommend you to go in for the Brazil Air pass that allows you to fly between any four Brazilian cities of your choice.

The travel time from Recife is 1hour 40 minutes and the distance is 540km(335,5 miles). If you are flying from Natal, it takes 1hour and 10 minutes and the distance is 350km(217,4 miles). The cruise option is available only between the months of October and February.

Geographical Information

Fernando de Noronha is a cluster of 21 islands which is known to be of volcanic origin. The island comes under the Pernambuco state and is located approximately 350km(217,4 miles)off Natal, 540km(3335,5 miles) off Recife and about 200 miles(321,8 km) off the north coast of Brazil.

The island has the main land that measures 18.4sq km.  UNESCO has declared Fernando de Noronha as a World Heritage Site and Nature Monument. The island has a great history since it was repeatedly invaded by different nations.

Amerigo Vespucci discovered the island in 1503. Interesting folk tales are narrated by the natives about this beautiful island. All the administration is looked after and handled by the Brazilian Government. The island imposes strict rules and regulations for tourists in order to preserve its eco system.

Getting around

The best mode of transport in Fernando de Noronha is the dune buggy. It is an open jeep with no doors. Tourists can rent these dune buggies to go around the island. The charges are about $100BR a day, but it’s important to make sure it is in good condition. The hotels or inns where you stay will help you get good deal.

Tourists can rent a car or a bike, but the dune buggy is the best option since these vehicles are able to traverse through difficult trails. The drivers can serve the purpose of a guide and will take you to some of the most beautiful locations that are hardly visited.

Boat tours are every tourist’s favorite option. The boats set sail from the Antonio Port at 9.00 am. Each boat can take around 15 passengers. These boats offer marvelous view of beaches and tourists sometimes get to catch a close glimpse of the famous spinner dolphins. The boat stops at Sancho Bay where tourists get the opportunity to go diving for free.
